Uzbekistan delegation attended the Ministerial Conference on promoting religious freedom

On July 24-26, 2018, the delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan attended the Ministerial conference on religious freedom in Washington at the invitation of the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The delegation included Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulaziz Kamilov, First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Sodik Safoyev, Minister of Justice Ruslanbek Davletov, Deputy Secretary of the Security Council under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Bobur Usmanov, member of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and Director of the National Human Rights Centre Akmal Saidov, special representative of the President of Uzbekistan for Afghanistan Ismatilla Irgashev.
 
The conference was attended by about 600 representatives from more than 80 countries, at the level of foreign ministers, heads of international organizations, religious leaders and civil society activists.
 
Opening the forum, the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo noted that the administration of D.Trump focuses on issues of ensuring religious freedom in building its foreign policy.
 
In his address, the head of Uzbekistan delegation, Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov described in detail the initiatives of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev aimed at spreading ideas of enlightened Islam. It was emphasized that Uzbekistan has deep roots in this issue. The decision of the Head of Uzbekistan on establishment of an International Research Center named after Imam al-Bukhari, Center of Islamic Civilization, as well as Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan in the country was particularly highlighted.
 
It was stated that this decision of the President of Uzbekistan is in tune with the initiative of President Donald Trump on establishment of a Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology in Riyadh. The importance of working with youth for preventing threat of radicalism was emphasized. In this regard, the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan on development and adoption of the UN International Convention on youth rights was announced.
 
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following the forum a Declaration of the Ministerial conference was adopted, which confirmed commitment of participating countries to further promote religious freedom.
