Religious freedom – an important basis for an open civil society

Institute for Strategic and Regional Studies under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan hosted a roundtable discussion on “Guarantee of religious freedom – an important basis for an open civil society”.
The event was attended by representatives of relevant ministries and agencies, public organizations and religious denominations, experts in religion, as well as diplomatic corps accredited in Uzbekistan and journalists.
Presentations on the current issues of ensuring inter-confessional and inter-ethnic harmony in society, liberalizing legislation in religion and human rights based on international norms, as well as international relations, in particular, cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United States in religion, were heard at the event.
Special attention was paid to strengthening inter-confessional dialogue as an important factor in ensuring public order. Confessional Council under the Committee on Religious Affairs, which acts as a public-advisory body, has been approved. Its members are all religious organizations of various faiths registered in Uzbekistan.
