Uzbekistan to join the Convention on Nuclear Safety

Tashkent hosts a national workshop on joining the Convention on Nuclear Safety.

The event, organized by the State Committee for Industrial Safety of the Republic of Uzbekistan together with the International Atomic Energy Agency, was attended by senior officials of relevant ministries and agencies, local and foreign experts.
 
“The resolution of the President Shavkat Mirziyoyev “On approval of the Concept for development of nuclear energy in the Republic of Uzbekistan for 2019-2029” of February 7, 2019 defines the tasks of joining the Republic of Uzbekistan to international conventions in nuclear energy or the implementation of their provisions in the legislative acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as the preparation of relevant normative-legal acts”, says Oybek Muhammadjonov, deputy head of the department of the State Industrial Safety Committee. “In accordance with this, it is envisaged that Uzbekistan will join 4 conventions, including the Convention on Nuclear Safety (Vienna, June 17, 1994). At the event, local experts presented information on the procedures associated with construction of nuclear power plants, the adopted relevant legislative acts and their implementation. In turn, the experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency briefed the participants in detail on the Convention on Nuclear Safety and the procedure for joining it. The application of the experience and knowledge gained at the workshop in the preparation of the national report and the plenipotentiary organization of this process, familiarizing the public with the results of this work are the main goals of this workshop.
 
At the event, views were exchanged on the creation of safe and cost-effective nuclear fuel cycle, the long-term provision of nuclear energy for nuclear fuel, and safe implementation of work related to its reprocessing and waste disposal.
