Meeting with the U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom

2019-09-24 | Politics

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov held talks with the U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom Samuel Dale Brownback, in New York.

The representative of the U.S. Department of State noted that the progress in ensuring human rights in Uzbekistan over the past three years, as well as the current level of strategic partnership between the two countries, allowed Uzbekistan to be removed from the list of the Country of Particular Concern. In his opinion, this achievement was made possible thanks to the leadership and commitment of Uzbekistan to ensure freedom of religion. The American diplomat welcomed the decision to close the Jaslyk prison.

The Ambassador noted that participation of Uzbekistan delegation at ministerial conferences to advance religious freedom in Washington became a testament to the recognition by the United States of ongoing reforms.

In this context, Samuel Dale Brownback welcomed the beginning of consideration of the Law “On freedom of conscience and religious organizations” by deputies of the Oliy Majlis. The Ambassador expressed the hope that the draft law would reflect international best practices and standards in respect of religious freedom.

Uzbekistan delegation plans to attend the high-level conference on the Global Call to Protect Religious Freedom, as well as a roundtable discussion on religious freedoms with participation of leading American companies.
