2019-05-02 | Politics

On May 2, 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov, who arrived in Tashkent for holding bilateral negotiations and participation at the 11th review meeting of the Parties to the Memorandum of Understanding on sub-regional drug control cooperation.

According to Uzbekistan MFA, during the negotiations, the parties discussed bilateral and regional issues, as well as exchanged views on current international issues.

Ministers reviewed the implementation of agreements reached during President Vladimir Putin's state visit to Uzbekistan in October 2018 and his negotiations with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. As it was noted, the parties control a significant package of trade-economic agreements and investment contracts signed during the visit. Agreements in political-diplomatic, inter-parliamentary, cultural-humanitarian cooperation are being consistently implemented.

Currently, the parties are preparing for the first meeting of the Joint Commission at the level of heads of government, which is expected to consider priority areas for further expansion of trade-economic relations.

At the meeting, issues of opening branches of four leading Russian universities in Uzbekistan – MEPhI, VGIK, Moscow Power Engineering Institute and Russian University of Chemical Technology were also discussed.

Foreign Ministers focused on interaction between Uzbekistan and Russia on the Afghan issue, including within the framework of international efforts on launching inter-Afghan peace negotiations and socio-economic rehabilitation of Afghanistan.

Ministers also exchanged views on prospects for strengthening security and cooperation in the region.

Russia’s Ambassador Vladimir Tyurdenev attended the meeting.
