On March 31, 2019, the Governmental delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan led by the Secretary of the Security Council under the President of Uzbekistan Viktor Makhmudov and Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulaziz Kamilov visited Afghanistan on a working visit, Uzbekistan MFA reports.
Uzbekistan delegation was received by the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.
At the meeting, current issues of further development of bilateral relations in political, trade-economic, transport-communication, cultural-humanitarian and other fields were discussed.
The sides also exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan.
The President of Afghanistan expressed his gratitude to the Uzbek side for actively assisting the launch of the peace process, emphasizing that one of the key conditions for stabilizing the situation in the country is its socio-economic revival, in which Uzbekistan plays a significant role.
Mohammad Ashraf Ghani stated that Afghanistan is grateful to Uzbekistan for stepping up economic and infrastructure cooperation. He also noted that economic interaction will lead to regional stability.
The Head of Afghanistan also thanked the Uzbek delegation for choosing the city of Samarkand as a possible platform for organizing peace talks.
Other issues of Uzbekistan – Afghanistan agenda, as well as international and regional issues were also discussed at the meeting.
Within the framework of Uzbekistan delegation’s visit, a regular meeting of the joint Security Commission was held in Kabul under the chairmanship of the Secretary of the Security Council under the President of Uzbekistan Viktor Makhmudov and the National Security Adviser to the President of Afghanistan Hamdullah Mohib.
On the same day, Uzbekistan delegation held talks with the Chief Executive Officer of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Abdullah Abdullah, National Security Adviser to the President Hamdullah Mohib, Minister of Foreign Affairs Salahuddin Rabbani, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and the Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Tadamichi Yamamoto and former President Hamid Karzai.
Heads and representatives of the ministries and agencies of the economic bloc of Uzbekistan and Afghanistan held meetings, during which the practical aspects of further enhancing cooperation, proposals for giving new dynamics to mutual trade, implementing major joint investment projects, building the Mazar-i-Sharif – Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif – Kabul – Peshawar railways, Surkhan – Puli-Khumri power lines were considered.
A number of documents were signed after the negotiations.
