On January 24, the 6th European Union – Central Asia High Level Conference on Environment and Water Cooperation kicked off in Tashkent.
It is attended by delegations from Central Asian countries – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, representatives of environmental organizations of such EU member countries as Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Latvia, Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania, specialized UN structures, EBRD experts, heads of international think tanks.
Chairman of the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection Bakhrom Kuchkarov, Deputy Head of the Central Asia Division of the European External Action Service Philippe van Amersfoort, representative of the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea of Italy Massimo Cozzone and others addressed the opening ceremony of the event.
Results of activities of the platform for environment and water cooperation European Union – Central Asia for 2015-2018 were presented at the event.
At the sectional meetings of the conference, issues of improvement of the ecological and socio-economic situation in the Aral Sea region, supporting the Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea Region, further development of regional partnership within the framework of activities of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, attracting external financial and technical assistance were discussed.
Suggestions were made on mitigating the effects of climate change, reducing environmental pollution, attracting investment in infrastructure for supporting the green economy. Priority areas for cooperation between the EU and Central Asia have been identified.
Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection and the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea of Italy.
