President of Uzbekistan receives former UN Secretary-General

On November 27, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who currently heads the Assembly of the Global Green Growth Institute and the Ethics Commission of the International Olympic Committee.

Ban Ki-moon arrived in Uzbekistan to participate in the International Conference on the issues of improving the environmental situation in the Aral Sea region and the role of the Korean diaspora in this process, which was held in Nukus.
 
Warmly welcoming the distinguished guest, the Head of the state emphasized his great services in strengthening peace and stability and achieving the Millennium Development Goals, including by consolidating the efforts of the world community on countering the global challenges and threats of our time.
 
Ban Ki-moon’s personal contribution to the widespread attraction of international attention to issues of overcoming the negative consequences of the Aral tragedy was highly appreciated.
 
As UN Secretary-General, he actively supported the initiatives and proposals of Uzbekistan and Central Asian countries on improving the environmental situation in the Aral Sea region.
 
During the conversation, prospects for development of cooperation with international institutions and organizations on promoting priority projects in the Aral Sea region were considered.
 
Views were also exchanged on expanding multifaceted cooperation and strengthening the strategic partnership between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republic of Korea. Contribution of numerous Korean diaspora in Uzbekistan to deepening friendship and mutual understanding between people and countries was noted with satisfaction.
 
Ban Ki-moon, expressing gratitude to the President of Uzbekistan for the warm welcome, praised the large-scale reforms and transformations within the framework of the Development Strategy until 2021 adopted in Uzbekistan, which fully complies with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
 
Efforts undertaken by Uzbekistan within the framework of the State Program on Development of the Aral Sea Region for 2018-2021, aimed at radical improvement of socio-economic situation in the region, solving environmental problems, developing healthcare and education systems, improving infrastructure, were emphasized.
 
The initiatives of the Head of the state on creating a multi-partner Trust Fund for Human Security and the International Innovation Center of the Aral Sea region were fully supported.
 
Ban Ki-moon reaffirmed his commitment to continue actively contribute to further strengthening strategic partnership between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republic of Korea, close effective cooperation to overcome the consequences of the Aral Sea catastrophe.
