Uzbekistan gets the opportunity to treat cancer patients using the world’s leading clinics technologies

2018-08-28 | Healthcare

On August 28, 2018, the Radiotherapy Complex of Elekta Infinity company has been opened in the Republican Specialized Scientific Practical Medical Center of Oncology and Radiology, where a modern remote radiation therapy device with a linear electron accelerator is installed.

It is known that radiation therapy is one of the main methods of treating cancer patients. It is used in combination with operative treatment and in independent variants, and also as a means of palliative and symptomatic therapy. Modern radiation therapy in highly developed countries is used not less than in 60 percent of oncological patients. The acquisition by the clinic of a linear accelerator for radiotherapy will allow to expand the contingent of irradiated patients, introduce new technologies that are rapidly changing and improving. These changes are aimed at improving the quality and results of treatment.

According to the Information Service of the Ministry of Health, using IMRTVMAT in addition will significantly reduce the dose load on critical organs, reduce the risk of post-radiation complications and optimize radiotherapy in a specific clinical situation. To date, this technology is the “gold” standard of treatment in developed countries for tumors of the head, chest, abdominal cavity, pelvis. In addition, the rotational technique of radiotherapy with modulation of the beam intensity (VMAT) will significantly reduce the time of the irradiation session by 2-3 times, which will increase the capacity of the equipment. This, in turn, is extremely important in treatment of moving targets, such as lung tumors and prostate cancer.
