The air pearl of the orient

2016-08-19 | Society

The Tashkent airport will in the near future turn into one of the largest and most modern air harbors of the region. The “Tashkent-4” international terminal will make its basis, the design of which has recently been completed by South Korean specialists.

The government of Uzbekistan has an intention to turn the Tashkent Airport into one of the most important regional air hubs. The South Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), which provided support in the elaboration of design documentation of the new terminal, was selected as a strategic partner for the achievement of this objective.

Recently, KOICA and Uzbekistan Airways have held a final project workshop on the elaboration of a feasibility study for the construction of the new terminal.

Work on the feasibility study started at the beginning of the current year. For the purpose of realization of this project, the South Korean partners selected a consortium of companies made up of the Korea Incheon International Airport Corporation, Heerim Architects & Planners, Yooshin Engineering Corporation, the Korea Transport Institute and the EY Hanyong. As a result, they prepared a draft feasibility study and the airport management master plan.

These documents are planned to be approved by the Government of Uzbekistan by the end of the year to open financing and begin construction and assembly works on the main facility. The new terminal will be completed within the next three years, its territory will be double the size of the existing one, while the building for passenger service will exceed three times over the area of the current one.

More than $336 million will be channeled into construction work, according to preliminary estimates. The major part of these resources – nearly $300 million – will make up investments and loans. It is also planned that the terminal will serve 1,5 thousand passengers per hour, or over 5,7 million passenger per annum.

“In preparing the draft design of the new terminal we used the experience gained during the construction of the “Incheon” airport and its management system, which is recognized as one of the best in the world. Designers elaborated the optimal plan for the achievement of results that would meet the requirements of the Uzbek side. Now, local experts will be able to familiarize themselves with the advanced Korean expertise in the airport management,” said General Manager of the airport "Inchen", Kim Dong-Chel.
