Level of urbanization in the Republic of Uzbekistan

2020-08-04 | Society

As at 1 July 2020, the resident population of the Republic of Uzbekistan stood at 34,191,700 of people, which represented an increase of 286,500 people or 0.85 %, during the beginning of the year, of which:

Urban population - 17,301,000. Since the beginning of the year, there has been an increase of 156,900 people or 0.92 %

Rural population - 16,890,700. Since the beginning of the year, there has been an increase of 129,600 people or 0.77 %.

Urbanization is a long and intensive process. It is a continuum of issues and actions, encompassing issues of migration, efficiency of land administration, urban planning, urban infrastructure development and housing, and the growth of the population.

The main objective of urbanization is to achieve sustained economic growth and improve the well-being of the population through integrated urban development and urban agglomerations that will attract labour and investment.

A strategic platform and strategy for the development of the major cities of Uzbekistan are being established, which will make it a centre of attraction for the population, with a developed infrastructure and potential for education, employment and social protection. This, in turn, will allow migration in the regions to be more local, thus directing it not to the capital but to the large cities of each individual region.

Urbanization has also been accompanied by the expansion of the satellite urban network around large cities and the merging of individual cities, which have become an important aspect of urbanization, which in turn will make it possible to relieve the pressure on big cities to produce consumer goods and services and to optimize housing and traffic.
